Heritage Number 6. Tom Plance

Tom hails from Ottery St Marys near Exeter, after growing up playing Rugby Union he found Rugby League playing for the University of Bath Rugby League (Broncos), in a strong squad playing a part in getting them promoted into National League South and coached by The West Wales Raiders player and Wales Rugby League – Rygbi Cynghrair Cymru International Morgan Evans. Tom was the clubs inaugural captain and was instrumental in recruiting and galvanised a squad together in the first season. Tom’s best position was hooker, but also played halfback and the occasional appearance at loose forward. He started off his Rugby League career on the wing and centre.

While at university Tom represented South West Universities RL, Scotland Rugby League Students and was with the South Wales Scorpions (now known as West Wales Raiders) development squad. While playing for the club Tom was also selected for the West of England Representative Rugby League squad. On completing university Tom joined the Army.

Tom commented about his time with Bath Rugby League:

“Chris approached me with an idea of starting a new club in Bath, I thought it would be a great idea and to get on board with it. Shortly after that I had the privilege of being elected club captain for the year. A position I took a lot of pride in.

We had a semi-successful first season, creating a quality environment for new players to have an opportunity they may not have had exposure to previously. There‚Äôs plenty of potential going forward at the club and I wish them well for the up and coming seasons.”
